National Minimum Wage Increased From 1st October 2010

Low paid workers are encouraged to carefully check their pay slips this month to make sure they have been given the increase to the National Minimum wage from 1st of the month.

Government has increased each of the three different rates of the national Minimum wage and has also lowered the age at which the highest adult rate must now be paid. Previously only people aged 22 and over were entitled to the full adult rate, now this has been extended to all 21 year olds as well.

The hourly minimum wage rates have increased from:-

• £5.80 to £5.93 an hour for workers aged 21 and over
• £4.83 to £4.92 an hour for workers aged 18 to 20
• £3.57 to £3.64 an hour for workers aged 16 to 17

In addition, the government has agreed to a new minimum wage rate of £2.50 per hour for apprentices under 19 years of age and for apprentices 19 and over but who are in their first year of their appenticeship.

If you believe your employer is paying you less than the minimum wage you can get advice from one of the LAN employment Rights advice providers here. Alternatively you can now call the new Pay and Rights helpline free on 0800 917 2368 and you can make an anonymous complaint online about an employer not paying the NMW at the HMRC website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/nmw/complaint.htm
